PIME Missionary Fr. Dowluri Suresh Kumar, or Fr. Bosco as he is known, is the pastor of Our Lady of Good Help Parish in Barreirinha in the Brazilian Amazon. His mission includes not just the river city of Barreirinha and its outskirts, but also the people who live on the riverbanks and in the Indigenous lands of the Sateré-mawé and Quilombola (Afro-descendant) ethnic groups. These communities live in extreme hardship, with their access to food and supplies becoming dependent on the Amazon River itself, where it becomes difficult for boats to come when the river shrinks during the dry season, and with houses built of wood that are flooded and, at times, washed away by the river in the rainy season.

Father Bosco, with this vital ministry, provides some security to these needy families living in this unpredictable Amazon river region with food. With a budget of $8,333, he is able to provide food baskets with essential monthly supplies to numerous poor families for over six months.  Beyond addressing physical hunger, Fr. Bosco aims to bring spiritual comfort to the many souls entrusted to his care into 2026. Your contributions to this initiative shine a light of hope in these isolated communities and help support their struggling families.

Food Baskets Bring the Gospel to the Impoverished in the Brazilian Amazon

Published Thu, Oct 30, 25. Written by Kathleen Connors.

Fr. Bosco recently updated us on the food basket project. The initiative has expanded from assisting 40 to 60 families each month in the first half of 2025. With your help of $6,111, he was able to provide not just sustenance but ensure that the Gospel is experienced by the Amazon Indigenous communities he visits. Each food basket symbolizes solidarity and a reminder that no one faces their struggles alone.

Fr. Bosco noted the food, along with his visits, uphold dignity, foster joy among children, strengthen adults, and bring comfort to the elderly, all while nurturing hope in Barreirinha. Fr. Bosco and the community extend their gratitude to all who supported this project for bringing the light and life of the Gospel to these remote areas.  Thank you for supporting the most vulnerable among us!
