Cameroon is called Africa in miniature (switching from the sea, forests, humidity and rains, the almost deserted). It covers an area of square kilometers. 475,442 and has a population of around 16 million people. The capital Yaounde with 1,500,000 inhabitants. The country faces the Gulf of Guinea and is bordered by Nigeria, Chad, Rep. Central African, Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The climate is humid equatorial coast, tropical inside. The main ethnic groups are a dozen, each with its own language. Ethnic groups are about 260.

The country gained independence in 1960 and in 1972, following a referendum, became Republic. Although it has the tools necessary constitutional, Cameroon is far from having a stable policy framework and respectful of the rights of citizens and from ensuring them a dignified existence in economic terms.

Poverty is widespread and corruption affecting all sectors of the economy, to the point that for two years (‘98 and ‘99) the International Transparency body placed Cameroon on the top of the list of most corrupted countries in the world. And more particularly the North Cameroon living under the terror and fear of Muslim terrorism

of Boko Haram. These Muslim terrorists, are a threat to all children and young people who go to school, because Boko Haram means “NO SCHOOL”. All along the border with Nigeria for almost 40 km wide by 200 km  length there are more schools, and all pupils and students have taken refuge in neighboring towns, because schools have been destroyed and burned by the BH. Not only that, several schools were burned when there were still students in the classroom, other students were burned alive in their dormitories. Hence the urgent need for support for children and youth all over the world for education and training at all levels, to ensure their right to education.

Average income: 700 Euro

Official languages: English and French.

Religions: 25% Christian, 25% Muslim and 50% animists.

After we picked up from the border region, Kusseri, Waza and Maga we chose to work in the town of Kaele that collects several young students and refugees. In this town there are kindergartens, elementary schools, high schools and even some university sector. The youth of this town is much in need of support for schooling which unfortunately still very low. Hence the need for a pastoral neighborhood, which requires a missionary to a personal encounter with these young people to accompany them and prepare them for adult life. Also important to help them introduce the world of work, and be able to, in the future to build a society based on peace and respect for ethnic and religious.

For this to become reality, it is the great need of training and education to train young people, to be aware of the importance of lasting peace, for now threatened by terrorists and all those young people who have joined their cause. In fact, to prevent young people out of work and unable to become followers of Boko Haram, or live in crime, we want to commit ourselves to reverse course and place in a society that respects their culture, and their faith.

This town is developing and can make it possible for many young people to follow their studies without great dangers, but need to be followed and accompanied after school and at play. Unfortunately, this city, like many others, has more and more difficulty in inserting young people into work, and agriculture, which still remains the main source, but does not seem to meet the expectations of young people, who prefer to come to town.

Medical Fund Donors Provide for Baby's Surgery in Cameroon, Africa

Published Tue, Sep 21, 21. Written by Kathleen Connors.

Blandine is almost to her first birthday.  She lives in the far North of Cameroon in Africa, where living conditions are harsh.  She was born healthy in 2020, but started to show signs of hydrocephalus (water on the brain) at two months of age.

Blandine’s mother, Diane, cares for her with her grandmother as Blandine’s father abandoned them both.  In September, Diane sought medical attention for Blandine at the surgical mission of the Bethlehem Foundation in Mouda. There the Foundation recognized Blandine’s serious condition and immediately contacted a neurosurgeon in Garoua, who made her diagnosis. It is a miracle that Blandine has lived to be almost one, but she now needs immediate surgery to help her condition. The operation will involve creating drainage for the excess fluid in her skull.

The cost of the surgery is more than Diane and her family can afford, and with no public health system, such procedures must be paid for in advance.  Diane and Blandine needed $2,700 USD to pay for the operation, so the Bethlehem Foundation contacted the PIME Mission Center to help.  Thanks to your support of PIME’s Medical Fund, your contributions were immediately distributed to the Bethlehem Foundation in Cameroon, which has made the arrangements for Blandine’s surgery.  Thanks to your continued compassion and care for the most vulnerable among us, Blandine has a chance for a better life!

Assistance to the Disabled Continues in Cameroon

Published Fri, Apr 06, 18. Written by Kathleen Connors.

Activities continue at the Bethlehem Center in benefit of the disabled in order to improve their living conditions. With the generous help of PIME USA donors, the following services were implemented: consultation and diagnosis of patients to better intervene; orthopedic surgery of patients; monitoring and administration of medications to surgery patients and rehabilitation.

Two nurses and two physicians assisted 33 people (18 men, 9 women, 6 children). Patients were either x-rayed on site at the Foundation or sent to Maroua for x-rays. Thirteen patients were in need of surgery and were tended to at the Meskine Hospital. In addition, patients received post-operative care and medications at the Foundation as well as rehabilitation.

The different levels of intervention for people with disabilities has not only helped the rehabilitation of the disabled, but it has served to raise awareness about the value of disabled persons.
