Cecilia is the second youngest of six children. Their mother is unreliable and will leave for days, leaving the children with their grandmother, who can't support six children. At one point, the children were only getting two meals a day; she called upon the Sisters to help Cecilia to help her with an education and care for her in the ways their grandmother could not.
